Building Tips

Answers to recently asked questions:

Q: Where is the CG and CP suppose to be located?

A:  The CG is about 23 inches from the top of the Jettison Tower.  The CP is about 28 inches.  This CP location is according to RockSim Version 4.  I haven't gotten around to getting the new version yet, so there is only 6 tank tubes (it appears that a 6 tube cluster is all that RS4 will handle).  If you want the RS4 file I use, click here (be forewarned, it is really crude). (Note: if someone has a better one, please let me know, I would like to see it).

Q: Where does the clay go?

A:  The clay is to balance the model (see previous question).  It is to be attached (molded) to the bottom of the nose cone (use a screw eye or screw in the bottom of the nose cone to give the clay something to mold around).

Q:  What parts are "pre-cut"?

A:  The bulkhead rings, the tapered shrouds, the balsa wood fins (the modeler will need to sand a taper on them), and the Jettison Tower 'lattice' are all precut.

Q: Why put a 'screw-eye' in the bottom of the nose cone if there is a bulkhead that separates the nose cone from the parachute area? (reference steps 7 and 29)

A:  The modeler should poke a small hole in the bulk head to pass the shock cord.  The size of the hole will be determined by the shock cord used.  This is to keep the NC from flying off the model during recovery.

Wraps

I was contacted by Paul Graf about some Vacu-Formed wraps that he has made.  These are very well done and will add some nice details to your model.  If you are interested in these, contact Paul directly at grafgulch@aol.com

Paper Wraps

My brother found a corrugated paper product that will work very well for the corrugations on the Saturn 1b.  It is just like corrugated card-board that has corrugation on only one side - it has very small corrugations.  I am not sure what it is called, but he found it at a rubber stamp shop.  I suspect that it might be found at better craft shops.  These pictures are with the material wrapped around a bt101 tube.  It should give you a good example as to the size of the corrugation pattern.
